There is a CD revival and I am building a CD-only touchscreen player using AIMP; no files and no ripping (though I could if I want to). The goal is to use a approximately 22-inch 1920x1080 touchscreen monitor, which would allow for realistic model scaling. This may be mounted in some sort of enclosure to make it more attractive. The touchscreen would allow for directly pushing buttons on the player. Windows desktop would be black (or maybe a photo of whatever is physically behind the monitor), no icons, taskbar hidden, position locked; this is a CD player kiosk only!

Most notable looking players:

• Phase Linear 9500
• HITACHI DA-1000
• KYOCERA DA-01
• PHILIPS F5822 (prototype)
• PIONEER P-D1
• PHILIPS D6422 (prototype)

There are lots of HiFi cassette and reel-to-reel decks in the skins library, but I only see 1 vertical CD player, the Hitachi DA-1000 made by @Black_AVP. It is very beautiful and provides a bit of realism by showing a spinning disc and a CD jewel case with the cover art. It even has a great looking spectrum analyzer, EQ, and playlist, but you have to push the PRGM button to cycle the modes.

The goal would be to update the device's interface to accommodate the current playing track info. The cover art and playlist can be handled by either:

• having a CD jewel case that looks like it is open so you can see the cover art on the front cover and the playlist on the back cover. The CD jewel case can be placed on top of the player.
• making a separate device that shows the cover art and playlist in one (like Denon Classic Style 2.51 or Sony ES-Style Silver).

These are my four current go-to skins for this project, but they all lack in one way or another:

• Hitachi DA-1000 — CONS: small size; need to cycle through for disc animation, playlist, & spectrum; pause, forward/back track buttons are small for touch screen; PROS: has a CD jewel case!
• Denon Classic Style 2.51 — CONS: it's a cassette deck!; PROS: bigger size (though still small for 1920 wide monitor); current track info displayed, playlist + cover art in a separate unit
• Sony ES-Style Silver) — CONS: too small; no CD animation; need to cycle between cover art & playlist; PROS: big control buttons
• Black Onix Two — CONS: too small; no CD animation; no integrated playlist; PROS: lots of options; big control buttons

There are a lot of beautiful CD decks from the past, especially the vertical loaders that allow you to see a spinning disc; it really makes your music more tangible. Isn't that why we like so much stuff in our music players moving to our music (i.e. progress bars and VU meters) so we don't just hear the music, we see that there's something going on?!
