playlist switch colum what is purpose

I can not find the purpose of the switch column in the play list.  Can anyone enlighten me?

Using these switches, you can turn off tracks for automatic playback. But manually, you can still start playing them.
You can also turn off the display of this column in the settings for either all playlists or some (in personal settings for each playlist).
