Clarification:
I have a pro hardware equalizer. I also use it to make adjustments to improve the sound to my ear on my home equipment. I usually go too far, but in the right direction. Fortunately, it has a little button which cuts the amount of effect the equalizer has by half - which is usually about right. A slider would be even better.
It would not so much move things towards the middle as leave the settings alone, but only apply a percentage of the setting.
One use: I have some operas recorded in the 70s where the female voices are quite harsh. I set the equalizer quite severe for the worst of them, but it is the basic setting I use on all opera. Being able to make the correction less strong, but the same corrections, would save time adjusting for various recordings I listen to and would be more convenient than using many presets.
Another use: My headphones tend to be a little harsh at certain frequencies. This problem varies in amount depending on what I listen to - sometimes I want very little adjustment - but the frequencies are the same. Being able to use a slider to increase or decrease the amount of eq would be very useful.
It would be a little like using a parametric equalizer with one slider and a very complicated setting.
Again, it is something I've found very useful on my hardware equalizer, and I've always wished a music player would have the same, only better, feature.
