Title: Sorting order for files/albums in library
Post by: Kessi11 on November 28, 2020, 00:35:58
Hi AIMP team,

AIMP is for sure one of the most advanced music players for windows, however there is one thing that still bugs me when using it.
In the library section (where the tracks are listed individually, not the overview and filter section), I tend to have the albums grouped by artist, the artists are sorted alphabetically. Additionally, I think the albums of the same artist should be sorted by date.
This behavior is currently only achievable by clicking the columns "Artist", "Album" and "Year" in the correct order (always takes me a few tries before I get it right). To make things worse, this is not saved when the program is closed. Only the last column you clicked is applied for sorting after a restart. While saving the complete sorting order on exiting would kind of solve the problem, I think a programmable sorting behavior for the music library with its own dialoge window would be by far more elegant.

Here's an example of how the user could set sorting rules:
by (Album) Artist - alphabetically
    by Year - ascending
        by Album alphabetically
            by CD Number - ascending
                by Track Number - ascending

Whenever the rule above is ambiguous, meaning multiple tracks share the same attribute, the next lower rule is applied.
The example given above is my personal preference, but other users might want to organize all albums alphabetically while ignoring the artist or have a list of tracks sorted by date, user rating or times played. The proposal would allow the best possible experience for all users.

I would love to see this feature implemented!

Keep up the good work and best regards,
Kai

Use the CTRL key, Luke (Kai) :)

Quote from: From manual (Did you know that... - Music Library)
In the Music Library and Tag Editor you can sort the table by multiple columns: to do this just click on column with pressed CTRL key.

Honestly didn't know that, thanks!
While it is not exactly as advanced a feature as I hoped, it comes really close. I guess it is good enough for basically every normal application and makes my proposal extremly low priority, even for me.
