I prefer using webp for covers as it offers better flexibility than jpeg but using "edit all fields" will automatically convert webp covers to png, requiring me to use a different tag editor afterwards and it seems there is no option to disable that behavior
-
What's the point?
What's wrong with PNG?
-
Large size
Webp offers better compression even in lossless mode and is simply a better format than png if compatibility doesn't matter
Doesn't seem to me like conversion should be the default behavior without an option to disable it
Extra options never hurt

WebP is not yet supported by some devices.

I'll check this case, editor should not re-save the image if you've not change it.

This post may be off-topic: AIMP 6 Alpha doesn't display WebP covers in the player or editor.

You need webp-plugin for that: https://www.aimp.ru/?do=catalog&rec_id=1336
